—if, once you handed it over to her, you would be left without a waist-wrapper; and if you kept it, she would be left without a dowry? Go back and look for something, even if it is only a ring of iron.” He searched, but found nothing. Thus, not even the men confined themselves to covering merely what lies between the navel and the knee—ever.
In short, knowledge demands sound juristic insight and a careful look at the state of the Companions, may Allah be pleased with them: how they understood the texts so that we may put them into practice. Even today, most people in the unbelieving Western nations wear clothing that covers the chest and the thighs. No one has ever taken this hadith to mean that a woman may remain uncovered except for the span between the navel and the knee—no one, ever.
To summarize further: the Messenger ﷺ ruled that if a woman’s hem—the edge of her garment that drags along the ground—contacts impurity and she then walks over clean earth, that clean earth will purify it. This shows that impurity is removed by anything that eliminates it, whether water or something else.
Among the benefits of the Bedouin’s hadith are the noble character, teaching method, and gentleness of the Messenger ﷺ. The same conduct is required of us when we call people to Allah, command what is right, or forbid what is wrong: we must be gentle, for gentleness produces good while harshness produces evil. If you are rough, the other person may react in what they call a “backlash,” accept nothing from you, and even reject the religion because of your behavior. But if you act with kindness and patience, a positive response is far more likely.
Another lesson: the Messenger ﷺ described this nation as being “sent,” saying, “Indeed, you have only been sent,” although he himself is the one who was actually sent. His community, however, is obliged to take his place in conveying his religion.
