These hadiths describe the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and show that he was neither obscene nor deliberately foul-mouthed. In other words, he was distant from indecency both by nature and by choice: no obscenity lay in his disposition or instinct; rather, he was gentle and easy-going. Nor did he ever adopt indecency as a habit; indeed, he, peace and blessings be upon him, was the farthest of people from anything vulgar in word or deed.
They also exhort us to noble character and state that it will be among the heaviest things on the Balance on the Day of Resurrection—an encouragement to practice it. Therefore, dear Muslim brother, refine your conduct with Allah: welcome His universal and legislative decrees with a heart that is open, compliant, content, and submissive. Do the same with Allah’s servants, for Allah loves those who excel in goodness. Allah alone grants success.
7/627 – Abu Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him, reported that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, was asked, “Which thing admits the greatest number of people into Paradise?” He replied, “Taqwā of Allah (mindfulness of Allah) and good character.” He was then asked, “What causes the greatest number of people to enter the Fire?” He answered, “The mouth and the private parts.” Reported by al-Tirmidhī, who said: a sound and good (ḥasan ṣaḥīḥ) hadith.
8/628 – Abu Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him, also reported that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “The believers most perfect in faith are those best in character, and the best of you are those who are best to their wives.” Reported by al-Tirmidhī, who said: a sound and good (ḥasan ṣaḥīḥ) hadith.
