Sharḥ Riyāḍ al-ṢāliḥīnIbn al-'Uthaymin

His mother had brought him to the Messenger of Allah when the Prophet first arrived in Madinah, saying, “O Messenger of Allah, this is Anas ibn Mālik; let him serve you.” The Prophet accepted him purely for Allah’s sake and prayed that Allah would bless his wealth and his offspring. Allah did indeed bless both: it was said that he owned an orchard that produced fruit twice a year, and his direct descendants eventually numbered one hundred and twenty—all through the barakah of the Prophet’s supplication.

Anas would say that he had never touched brocade or silk softer than the hand of the Messenger of Allah; whenever anyone touched it, it was remarkably gentle.

Just as Allah softened his hand, He softened his heart. The Exalted says: “So by mercy from Allah you were lenient with them; and had you been harsh and hard-hearted, they would have scattered from around you. Therefore pardon them, ask forgiveness for them, and consult them in the matter. Then, when you resolve, put your trust in Allah” (Āl ʿImrān 3:159).

His fragrance was the same: no one had ever smelled a scent more pleasant than that of the Prophet. He naturally exuded a good fragrance and made frequent use of perfume. He said, “From your worldly life, women and perfume have been made beloved to me, and the coolness of my eyes is in the prayer.” He himself was fragrant—people would hasten to collect his perspiration because of its beauty and pleasant scent, seeking blessing through it. This is one of the Prophet’s unique qualities: we seek blessing from his sweat, his saliva, and his garments, whereas with anyone else such practices are not permissible.
