Sharḥ Riyāḍ al-ṢāliḥīnIbn al-'Uthaymin

by Allah’s grace and mercy.

The author—may Allah have mercy on him—then cited the hadith about the man who lets his garment trail. The Prophet ﷺ said: “Allah will not look at the one who drags his garment out of arrogance.” This is a serious matter, for a man is forbidden to let his robe, trousers, cloak, or lower wrap fall below the ankles; it must be at ankle height or higher. Whoever allows it to drop below the ankles has committed a major sin—may Allah protect us.

If he does so out of pride and haughtiness, Allah will neither look at him on the Day of Resurrection nor speak to him or purify him, and he will suffer a painful punishment. If he does so for some other reason—because he is tall and has not noticed, for instance—it is still authentically reported that the Prophet ﷺ said: “Whatever part of the lower garment falls below the ankles is in the Fire.”

Thus punishment is incurred in every case for what hangs below the ankles. Yet if it is done out of pride and conceit, the punishment is even greater: Allah will not look at its wearer on the Day of Resurrection, nor will He speak to him or purify him, and for him is a painful torment. If it is not done out of arrogance, he is nevertheless punished by the Fire itself—Allah’s refuge is sought.

Should someone ask, “What is the sunnah length?” we reply: from the ankle up to mid-calf—that is the sunnah. Mid-calf is sunnah, anything slightly higher is sunnah, and anything up to the ankles is sunnah, for this was how the Prophet ﷺ and his Companions dressed: their garments never extended past the ankles but reached mid-calf or rose a little higher. And whatever lies between
