of character and deeds. He is indeed the Ever-Generous.
1/612 – ʿAbdullāh ibn Masʿūd reported that the Prophet ﷺ said, “No one who has even a mustard-seed’s weight of arrogance in his heart will enter Paradise.” A man asked, “A person likes to have fine clothes and good shoes—is that arrogance?” He replied, “Allah is beautiful and loves beauty. Arrogance is rejecting the truth and belittling people.” Narrated by Muslim.
2/613 – Salamah ibn al-Akwaʿ reported that a man once ate in the presence of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ with his left hand. The Prophet said, “Eat with your right hand.” The man replied, “I cannot.” He said, “May you never be able!” Nothing kept him from complying except arrogance, and afterwards he was never able to raise that hand to his mouth. Narrated by Muslim.
[Explanation]
The author, Imām al-Nawawī—may Allah have mercy on him—mentions in his Riyāḍ al-Ṣāliḥīn, in the chapter on the prohibition of arrogance and self-admiration, the hadith of Ibn Masʿūd: “No one who has even a mustard-seed’s weight of arrogance in his heart will enter Paradise.” This belongs to the texts of threat (ḥadīth al-waʿīd) that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ states without qualification to deter people from the sin, even though the precise ruling must be understood in the light of other legal proofs.
Whoever harbors arrogance toward the truth and detests it is a disbeliever.
