24- Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—said, “Allah—glorified and exalted be He—smiles at two men, one of whom kills the other, yet both enter Paradise: this one fights in the cause of Allah and is killed, then Allah turns to the killer in mercy, he embraces Islam, and is martyred.” (Agreed upon)
[Commentary]
These two hadiths clarify the reality of repentance: whoever turns back to Allah, Allah accepts his repentance no matter how grave the sin. The Exalted has said:
“Those who do not invoke any other deity together with Allah, nor take a life that Allah has made sacred except with right, nor commit fornication—whoever does any of that will meet a penalty; the punishment will be doubled for him on the Day of Resurrection and he will abide therein humiliated—except those who repent, believe, and do righteous deeds. For such people Allah will replace their misdeeds with good deeds, and Allah is ever Forgiving, Merciful.” ⦗Al-Furqan 25:68-70⦘.
The first hadith, narrated by ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿAbbās (may Allah be pleased with them both), means that the child of Adam is never sated by wealth. Even if he possessed a single valley of riches, he would long—meaning he would crave—to have two valleys, and nothing will fill him except the dust of his grave. Only when he dies, is buried, and leaves the world with all it contains does he finally feel content, for this world is seductive. Nevertheless, the Messenger—peace and blessings be upon him—urged repentance, because a person driven by greed for wealth is usually careless about keeping away from prohibited earnings.
