Allah.
Then he cited the ḥadīth of Abū Hurayrah (Allah be pleased with him). The poor Emigrants once came to the Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace be upon him) and said, “Messenger of Allah, the people of great wealth have walked off with all the rewards—lofty ranks and everlasting bliss.” He asked, “And what is that?” They replied, “They pray as we pray and fast as we fast, but they give in charity while we cannot, and they set slaves free whereas we cannot.” In other words, they are better than we are because Allah has favoured them with wealth, which they spend in obedience to Him and in that which pleases Him.
He (blessings and peace be upon him) said, “Shall I not teach you something by which you will catch up with those who have gone ahead of you, outstrip those who come after you, and none will be better than you except someone who does what you do?” They answered, “Yes indeed, Messenger of Allah.” He said, “After every prayer say: Subḥān Allah (Glory be to Allah), al-ḥamdu lillāh (Praise be to Allah), and Allāhu akbar (Allah is Most Great) thirty-three times each.” That is, say Subḥān Allah thirty-three times, al-ḥamdu lillāh thirty-three times, and Allāhu akbar thirty-three times after each obligatory prayer.
They began to do so, but when the wealthy heard about it they too started repeating the same phrases—glorifying, praising, and magnifying Allah thirty-three times after every prayer. The poor then returned to the Prophet (blessings and peace be upon him) and said, “Messenger of Allah, our wealthy brothers heard what we were doing and have begun to do the same.” He replied, “That is Allah’s grace; He bestows it upon whom He wills.” That is, Allah enriched them, gave them property, and they spent it in obedience to Him—such is Allah’s grace.
This ḥadīth also shows that the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) used to vie with one another
