ʿAbdullāh ibn Masʿūd (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “Envy is warranted only in two cases: a man to whom Allah has given wealth and whom He enables to dispose of it in the cause of truth, and a man to whom Allah has granted wisdom, so he judges according to it and teaches it.” Agreed upon. Its explanation has appeared shortly before.

Ibn ʿUmar (may Allah be pleased with them both) reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “Envy is warranted only in two cases: a man to whom Allah has given the Qur’an, so he recites it in prayer night and day, and a man to whom Allah has given wealth, so he spends it night and day.” Agreed upon.

Abū Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The poor Emigrants came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said, “The people of great wealth have taken all the highest degrees and lasting bliss.” He asked, “What do you mean?” They replied, “They pray as we pray, they fast as we fast, yet they give in charity while we cannot, and they free slaves while we cannot.” The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “Shall I not teach you something whereby you will catch up with those ahead of you, outstrip those who come after you, and no one will be superior to you except those who do the same as you?” They said, “Yes, O Messenger of Allah!” He said, “After every prayer, glorify Allah—say subḥān-Allāh—thirty-three times, praise Him—say al-ḥamdu li-llāh—thirty-three times, and magnify Him—say Allāhu akbar—thirty-three times.”
Later the poor Emigrants returned and said, “Our brothers who possess wealth heard what we have been doing and they have begun to do the same.” The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “That is the bounty of Allah; He grants it to whom He wills.” Agreed upon, and this is the wording of Muslim.
The term ad-duthūr refers to abundant wealth. Allah knows best.
