Sharḥ Riyāḍ al-ṢāliḥīnIbn al-'Uthaymin

guides to channel it toward what is truly beneficial.

Such a man is the grateful rich person: he acquires wealth lawfully and spends it lawfully, exactly as Allah has legislated for him.

The author (may Allah have mercy on him) then cites several verses on this point, beginning with the words of Allah, the Exalted:

“As for the one who gives and is mindful (of Allah) and affirms the best promise, We shall ease him toward ease” (Al-Layl 5-7).

That is, he parts with his money in its proper place and fears Allah—both when earning it and when giving it—so Allah will steer him toward the path of ease.

Allah, Most High, also says:

“But as for the one who is stingy and thinks himself self-sufficient, and denies the best promise, We shall ease him toward hardship, and his wealth will be of no use to him when he plunges headlong. Indeed, it is for Us to provide guidance” (Al-Layl 8, 12).

And He says:

“The most God-fearing will be kept far from it (the Fire)—he who gives of his wealth to purify himself and who has in mind no favor to be repaid, but only seeking the Face of his Lord Most High; and surely he will be satisfied” (Al-Layl 17-21).

In other words, the one spared from that Fire is the godfearing person who donates his wealth in a manner that purifies him and draws him nearer to Allah. He does not give as recompense for a favor someone once did him; rather, he gives solely for Allah’s sake. Hence the verse says, “only seeking the Face of his Lord Most High.” Such a person will be content with the reward Allah grants him.

Therefore, when Allah enriches a believer, he must thank Allah by fulfilling the obligations He has placed on that wealth, disbursing it in its rightful channels and in the manner that pleases Allah, Mighty and Majestic.
