Chapter 58 Permission to Accept a Grant without Asking for It or Longing for It

1/538 – Salim ibn ‘Abd Allah ibn ‘Umar related from his father, ‘Abd Allah ibn ‘Umar, who reported from ‘Umar—may Allah be pleased with him—that he said:
“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ would give me a share of wealth, and I would say, ‘Give it to someone who is poorer than I am.’ He would reply, ‘Take it. Whenever something of this money comes to you while you have neither been eager for it nor have asked for it, then accept it and make it part of your property. If you wish, consume it; if you wish, give it in charity. But for anything that does not come to you, do not let your soul run after it.’”

Salim said: “‘Abd Allah would never ask anything of anyone, nor would he refuse anything that was given to him.”
Agreed upon.

The term “mushrif” (with the dotted shīn) means “eager for it, looking forward to it.”
