14/535 – Thawban (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “Who will pledge to me that he will not ask people for anything, and I will guarantee Paradise for him?” I said, “I will,” and thereafter he never asked anyone for a thing. Abū Dāwūd transmitted it with a sound chain.
15/536 – Abū Bishr Qabīṣah ibn al-Mukhāriq (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “I had undertaken the payment of a liability, so I came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) to ask his help with it. He said, ‘Stay with us until the zakah arrives; then we shall order that something be given to you.’ He then added, “Qabīṣah, asking is permissible only for one of three people:
- A man who has assumed liability for compensation; he may ask until he obtains what will discharge it, then he must desist.
- A man whose property has been struck by a calamity that wiped out his wealth; he may ask until he acquires what will sustain him— or, he said, what will cover his needs.
- A man whom poverty has overtaken, so that three sensible members of his tribe attest, ‘So-and-so has been touched by poverty’; he may ask until he secures enough for a livelihood— or, he said, enough to make ends meet.
Whatever lies beyond these cases, Qabīṣah, is unlawful; whoever takes it consumes what is forbidden.” Muslim narrated it.
16/537 – Abū Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “The needy person is not the one who goes around among the people so that a mouthful or two, or a date or two, sends him away; rather, the truly needy is the one who finds nothing sufficient to support him, yet he is neither noticed so that charity is given to him nor does he stand up to beg from others.” Agreed upon.
