and an obsessive preoccupation with it and ravenous greed.
6/527 – Hakim ibn Hizam (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “The upper hand is better than the lower hand. Begin with those you support. The best charity is what is given from surplus wealth. Whoever seeks to remain chaste, Allah will grant him chastity; and whoever strives for self-sufficiency, Allah will enrich him.” Agreed upon. This is al-Bukhari’s wording; Muslim’s version is shorter.
7/528 – Abu Sufyan Ṣakhr ibn Harb (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) declared, “Do not persist in asking. By Allah, no one among you ever asks me for something so that his request forces me to give while I am unwilling, and then finds any blessing in what I gave him.” Reported by Muslim.
9/530 – Ibn ʿUmar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrated that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “A person will go on begging until he meets Allah the Exalted with not a shred of flesh left on his face.” Agreed upon.
The word mazʿa (with ḍamma on the mīm, sukun on the zāy, and a plain ʿayn) means “a piece.”
[Commentary]
The compiler (may Allah have mercy on him) said, concerning what he related from Hakim ibn Hizam (may Allah be pleased with him), that Hakim asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and he gave him—that is, he asked him for money and he gave; then he asked again and he gave; then he asked a third time and he gave.
