he dies. Then he, blessings and peace be upon him, said, “My wealth, my wealth—my wealth, my wealth!” A person boasts of it, yet you have no share of your wealth except what you eat and consume, what you wear and wear out, and what you give in charity and thus send ahead.” So spoke the Prophet—upon him be peace—and so it is: a human being possesses nothing beyond these three things. He may eat food and drink, he may wear various garments, or he may give in charity; and what truly remains his is only what he gives away. As for what he eats and wears: if he uses them to help him obey Allah, they are a blessing for him, but if he uses them for disobedience, arrogance, and self-indulgence, they become a calamity for him—may Allah protect us. Allah alone grants success. *** 28/484- ʿAbd Allāh ibn Mughaffal, may Allah be pleased with him, said: A man once said to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, “O Messenger of Allah, by Allah I love you.” He replied, “Watch what you are saying.” The man repeated, “By Allah I love you,” three times. The Prophet then said, “If you truly love me, then prepare for poverty a tajfāf (protective armour), for poverty comes upon the one who loves me more swiftly than a flood reaches its end.” Reported by al-Tirmidhī, who graded it hasan (sound). 30/486- ʿAbd Allāh ibn Masʿūd, may Allah be pleased with him, said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, once slept on a woven mat, and when he rose we saw its marks on his side. We said, “O Messenger of Allah, shall we not prepare a cushion for you?” He replied, “What have I to do with this world? I am in this world only like a rider who sought shade beneath a tree, then went on his way and left it behind.” Reported by al-Tirmidhī, who graded it ḥasan ṣaḥīḥ (good and authentic).
