18/474 – ʿĀʾishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: “The Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace be upon him) passed away while there was nothing in my house that any creature with a liver could eat except a small portion of barley on a shelf of mine. I kept eating from it for a long time; then, when I measured it, it was gone.” Agreed upon.
Her words “a small portion of barley” mean: a little barley.
19/475 – ʿAmr ibn al-Ḥārith—the brother of Juwayriyyah bint al-Ḥārith, Mother of the Believers—(may Allah be pleased with him) said: “When the Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace be upon him) died, he left neither a dinar nor a dirham, neither a male slave nor a female slave—nothing at all—except his white mule which he used to ride, his weapons, and a plot of land that he had endowed as charity for the wayfarer.” Reported by al-Bukhārī.
Explanation
These ḥadiths that the author—may Allah have mercy on him—has cited fall under the chapter of turning away from the world, avoiding rivalry in it, longing for the Hereafter, and seeking one’s profit there. He therefore mentioned the ḥadith of Ibn ʿUmar (may Allah be pleased with him) who said: “The Prophet (blessings and peace be upon him) took hold of my shoulder.” He grasped his shoulder so that he would be fully alert to what he was about to tell him and then said: “Be in this world as though you were a stranger, or a traveler passing along his way.”
This wording may reflect uncertainty, meaning the narrator was not sure whether the Messenger of Allah uttered the first phrase or the second. It may also represent stylistic variation, i.e., be like a stranger who mingles with people without becoming attached to them and is unknown among them, or like a traveler on a journey who wishes to take
