yet they are not really drunk; rather, the punishment of Allah is severe” (Q 22:1–2). Such is the scene for those who look upon them and perceive something contrary to reality, for when a person is stupefied, even if what lies before him is certain, his senses and powers of perception abandon him.
The decisive point in the words “on a Day when there is no shade except His shade” is that the shade in question is the shade Allah creates that Day, with which He will shelter whomever He wills among His servants. That is the intended evidence here.
As for the Prophet’s words, “and a man who remembers Allah in seclusion and his eyes overflow with tears,” then, my brother, when you remember Allah, remember your Lord with a heart free of all other concerns. Do not let your mind wander to anything else; if you do, you will not taste the tears of awe or longing for Him. A person cannot weep out of yearning for Allah or fear of Him while his heart is occupied with something else. Hence the narration says, “he remembered Allah in solitude,” meaning a heart emptied of everything but Allah, and a body likewise alone—no one present who might tempt him to show off or seek praise. His heart is utterly sincere, and such a person too will be shaded by Allah on the Day when there is no shade but His.
I ask Allah to grant me and you that shade on the Day when there is no shade but His. All praise is due to Allah, Lord of all worlds, and may blessings and peace be upon our Prophet Muhammad.
