The Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—thereupon said, “That is enough for now.” Ibn Masʿūd continues: “I turned toward him and saw that his eyes were streaming with tears.” He—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—was weeping out of fear of that mighty and awe-inspiring scene. In this incident is proof that the recitation of the Qur’an can move a person to tears.
The author then cites another report that we have previously explained, wherein the Messenger—peace and blessings be upon him—said: “If you knew what I know, you would laugh little and weep much.” In other words, if you were aware of the realities that Allah has kept hidden from you—realities He disclosed to His Messenger, peace and blessings be upon him, yet the Prophet withheld them from creation as a mercy—you would react accordingly. It may also refer to certain truths that he alone was informed of and which others do not know; Allah knows best.
When the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, declared, “If you knew what I know, you would laugh little and weep much,” the Companions covered their faces and the sound of sobbing could be heard from them. They wept because the Prophet’s words served as a warning about what he knew. Thus they began to cry—may Allah be pleased with them all—demonstrating the perfection of their faith and the completeness of their trust in what the Messenger, peace and blessings be upon him, had conveyed.
Next the author mentions the famous hadith of Abū Hurayrah, already discussed: “Seven will be shaded by Allah in His shade on the Day when there is no shade but His.” Among them he counted “a man who remembers Allah in seclusion and his eyes overflow with tears.” He remembers Allah—His names, attributes, acts, rulings, and verses—alone, and his eyes overflow either out of longing for Him or out of fear of Him. Such a person will be among those whom Allah shades in His shade on the Day when there is no shade but His.
The shade referred to here is a shade that Allah, exalted is He, will create on the Day of Resurrection under which He will shelter those whom
