the Fire: a man who weeps out of fear of Allah until the milk returns to the udder, and the dust raised in the path of Allah shall never be joined with the smoke of Hell.” Narrated by al-Tirmidhi, who declared it “a ḥasan ṣaḥīḥ (good and sound) ḥadīth.”
4/449 – Abū Hurayrah—may Allah be pleased with him—also reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Seven types of people Allah will shade in His shade on the Day when there is no shade but His: a just ruler; a youth who grows up worshipping Allah, Exalted is He; a man whose heart is attached to the mosques; two men who love one another for Allah’s sake—meeting upon that and parting upon that; a man whom a woman of rank and beauty invites, yet he says, ‘Indeed, I fear Allah, Exalted is He’; a man who gives charity so secretly that his left hand does not know what his right hand spends; and a man who remembers Allah in solitude and his eyes overflow with tears.” Agreed upon.
[Explanation]
The author—may Allah have mercy on him—says: “Chapter on the merit of weeping out of fear of Allah,” meaning either out of dread of Him or longing for Him, Glorified and Exalted is He. Weeping has many causes: sometimes fear, sometimes pain, sometimes yearning, and other reasons people know.
Yet when the weeping springs from fear of Allah, it is either because one dreads Him or because one longs for Him, mighty and majestic. If the tears follow a sin the person has committed, their cause is fear of Allah, Most High; whereas if they follow an act of obedience, they arise from longing to meet Allah, Exalted is He.
