in multiplied measure, as stated in the sound hadith that likens this ummah to those who came before it: A man once hired laborers to work from the beginning of the day until noon and paid each of them one dinar. He then hired another group from noon until mid-afternoon and likewise paid each of them one dinar. Finally, he hired laborers from mid-afternoon until sunset and paid each of them two dinars. The earlier workers protested, saying, “How can you give us only one dinar apiece when we have worked longer than they, yet you give them two dinars each?” The employer replied, “Have I wronged you in any way?” They answered, “No.”
Thus no blame rests on him; likewise, Allah’s grace toward this community is immense.
Allah also pleased His Messenger—praise be to Him—concerning his ummah in several other ways: their reward is abundant; although they are the last chronologically, they will be the first on the Day of Resurrection; and they enjoy many unique virtues. The Prophet—may blessings and peace be upon him—said, “I have been given five things that no prophet before me was given: I have been supported with awe that travels a month’s distance ahead of me; the earth has been made for me a place of worship and a means of purification; and spoils of war have been made lawful for me, whereas they were unlawful for anyone before me….” These are distinctions granted to him and to his community.
In sum, every hadith the author—may Allah have mercy on him—has cited here is a hadith of hope. They spur a person to perform righteous deeds while longing for Allah’s reward and His pardon.
