Sharḥ Riyāḍ al-ṢāliḥīnIbn al-'Uthaymin

12/407 — Abu Barzah – Nadhla ibn ʿUbayd al-Aslami (may Allah be pleased with him) – reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “A servant’s feet will not move on the Day of Resurrection until he is questioned about his lifetime and how he used it, about his knowledge and what he did with it, about his wealth – how he earned it and how he spent it – and about his body and how he wore it out.” Narrated by al-Tirmidhi, who classified it as ḥasan ṣaḥīḥ (sound and authentic).

[Commentary]
All of the hadiths the author, may Allah have mercy on him, has cited here underscore the enormity of the Day of Resurrection and the necessity for every believer to fear that tremendous day.

He reports narrations stating that the sun will draw near to the creatures by only a mile. Sulaim ibn ʿĀmir, who related the report from al-Miqdad, said, “I do not know whether the Prophet meant a terrestrial mile or the length of a kohl-stick; in either case the distance is small.” If, while the sun now stands at its zenith in this world and at such a remove from us, its heat is what we feel, then what will its heat be when it is that near?

Yet Allah will spare whomever He wills from that sun. Allah will shade certain people in His shade on the day when there is no shade but His. Among them are those already mentioned – the seven whom Allah will place in His shade on the day when there is no shade but His: 1) a just ruler; 2) a youth who grew up in obedience to Allah; 3) a man whose heart is attached to the mosques; 4) two men who love one another for the sake of Allah, meeting for His sake and parting for His sake; 5) a man whom a woman of rank and beauty invites to sin and he says, “I fear Allah”; 6) a man who gives charity so secretly that his left hand does not know what his right hand spends; and 7) a man who remembers Allah in solitude and his eyes overflow with tears.
