Sharḥ Riyāḍ al-ṢāliḥīnIbn al-'Uthaymin

The author—may Allah have mercy on him—then cites additional Qur’anic verses in the chapter on fear, some of which have already been mentioned. Among them is the Almighty’s statement: “Allah cautions you about Himself” (Āl ʿImrān 3:28), meaning that He warns us of Himself, lest He punish us for our sins and acts of disobedience.

He also says: “O people, fear your Lord; the quake of the Hour is a tremendous thing. On the Day you behold it, every nursing mother will forget the child she was nursing; every pregnant woman will miscarry; and you will see people appearing drunk, though they are not drunk—but the punishment of Allah is severe” (al-Ḥajj 22:1–2).

This too shows that a person must dread that awesome Day concerning which Allah said: “On the Day you behold it, every nursing mother will forget the child she was nursing,” that is, because of the terrors and horrors she sees. “Every pregnant woman will miscarry, and you will see people appearing drunk,” meaning stunned and bereft of reason, “though they are not drunk, but the punishment of Allah is severe.”

Allah, Blessed and Exalted, also says: “The Day when a man will flee from his brother” (ʿAbasa 80:34), which has already been discussed.

And He says: “For the one who fears standing before his Lord there will be two Gardens” (ar-Raḥmān 55:46), and so on to the end of the surah. That is, whoever fears standing before Allah, obeys Him, and dreads His punishment will receive two Gardens. Later in the passage He says: “And below them are two other Gardens” (ar-Raḥmān 55:62). Thus there are four Gardens for the one who fears his Lord, though people will occupy different ranks within them. We ask Allah to make us and all Muslims among their inhabitants.
