Reported by Muslim and already mentioned in the preceding chapter.
8/382 — Abū Idrīs al-Khawlānī (may Allah have mercy on him) said: “I entered the mosque of Damascus and saw a young man with radiant teeth, surrounded by the people. Whenever they differed about anything they would refer it to him, and they were content with his opinion. I asked, ‘Who is this?’ and was told, ‘This is Mu‘ādh ibn Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him).’
The next morning I went early, yet he had arrived before me and was praying. I waited until he finished, then approached him from the front, greeted him, and said, ‘By Allah, I love you for the sake of Allah.’
He replied, ‘By Allah?’ I said, ‘By Allah.’ He asked again, ‘By Allah?’ and I again answered, ‘By Allah.’ He then seized the edge of my cloak, pulled me toward him, and said, ‘Rejoice! For I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: “Allah, the Exalted, has said: My love is incumbent upon those who love one another for My sake, those who sit together for My sake, those who visit one another for My sake, and those who give of themselves for My sake.”’
This is an authentic hadith, recorded by Mālik in the Muwaṭṭaʾ with a sound chain.
His statement, ‘hajjartu (I went early),’ means ‘I arrived very early’; the jīm is pronounced with emphasis. As for the exchange ‘Āllāh? — qul-tu: Allāh,’ the first word carries an extended hamzah because it is interrogative, while the second is without elongation.
9/383 — From Abū Karīmah al-Miqdād ibn Maʿdikarib (may Allah be pleased with him) who said that the Prophet ﷺ declared: “When a man loves his brother, let him tell him that he loves him.” Reported by Abū Dāwūd and al-Tirmidhī, who graded it ḥasan (sound).
10/384 — Mu‘ādh (may Allah be pleased with him) related that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ took him by the hand and said, “O—”
