42 – Chapter: Showing kindness to the friends of one’s father and mother, to relatives, one’s spouse, and to all whom it is commendable to honor.
1/341 – Ibn ʿUmar (may Allah be pleased with them both) reported that the Prophet ﷺ said, “The finest act of filial piety is for a man to maintain relations with his father’s friends.”
2/342 – ʿAbd Allah ibn Dinar narrated that Ibn ʿUmar (may Allah be pleased with them both) was once met on the road to Mecca by a Bedouin. Ibn ʿUmar greeted him, seated him on the donkey he himself had been riding, and gave him the turban that had been on his head. Ibn Dinar says, “We said to him, ‘May Allah set you right! They are Bedouins; they are satisfied with very little.’ Ibn ʿUmar replied, ‘The father of this man was a dear friend of ʿUmar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him), and I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, “The finest act of filial piety is for a man to keep up ties with the loved ones of his father.”’”
In another version, Ibn Dinar relates from Ibn ʿUmar that whenever he set out for Mecca he kept a donkey to relieve himself when he grew tired of riding the camel, and a turban with which he bound his head. One day, while he was on that donkey, a Bedouin passed by and said, “Are you not the son of so-and-so, the son of so-and-so?” He replied, “Yes.” Ibn ʿUmar then handed him the donkey, saying, “Ride this,” and gave him the turban, saying, “Tie this around your head.” One of his companions exclaimed, “May Allah forgive you! You have given this Bedouin a donkey you used to rest upon and a turban you used to bind your head with!” Ibn ʿUmar answered, “I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, ‘Among the highest forms of filial piety is to maintain…’”
