37 — Chapter: Spending from One’s Beloved Possessions and from the Best of One’s Wealth
Allah the Exalted says: “You will never attain righteousness until you spend of that which you love” (Q 3:92). And He says: “O you who believe, spend of the good things you have earned and of what We have brought forth for you from the earth; and do not aim at the defective thereof, spending from it” (Q 2:267).
1/297 — Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: “Among the Helpers in Madinah, Abu Ṭalḥah (may Allah be pleased with him) possessed the greatest wealth in date-palms, and the property he cherished most was Bayrūḥāʾ, an orchard that faced the mosque. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ would often enter it and drink from its pleasant water.
When the verse, ‘You will never attain righteousness until you spend of that which you love’ (Q 3:92), was revealed, Abu Ṭalḥah went straight to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, ‘Messenger of Allah, Allah has sent down, “You will never attain righteousness until you spend of that which you love.” The wealth I love most is Bayrūḥāʾ, and I hereby give it as charity for the sake of Allah. I hope for its reward and its treasure with Allah, so dispose of it, Messenger of Allah, as Allah shows you.’
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, ‘Excellent! That is a profitable property, a truly profitable property. I have heard what you said, and I think you should distribute it among your close relatives.’ Abu Ṭalḥah said, ‘I will do so, Messenger of Allah,’ and he divided it among his relatives and paternal cousins.” Agreed upon.
His ﷺ statement, “māl rābiḥ” (a profitable property), is recorded in both Ṣaḥīḥ collections as rābiḥ (with the letter bāʾ) and as rāʾiḥ (with the letter yāʾ), meaning: its benefit will return to you. “Bayrūḥāʾ” refers to a date-palm orchard; it is transmitted with both a kasrah and a fatḥah on the initial bāʾ.
