5/264 — On his authority it is related that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “The destitute person is not the one who can be turned away with a date or two, or a mouthful or two. The truly destitute person is the one who maintains his self-respect.” Agreed upon.
In another wording recorded by both Ṣaḥīḥ collections: “The destitute person is not he who goes about among the people so that a mouthful or two, a date or two, send him away. Rather, the destitute person is he who finds no means sufficient for him, is not noticed so that charity is given him, and does not stand up to beg from people.”
[Commentary]
The author—may Allah have mercy on him—also cited what Saʿd ibn Abī Waqqāṣ ﵁ narrated from the Prophet ﷺ: “I and the guardian of an orphan will be like this,” and he gestured with his index and middle fingers. That is, he raised the index and the middle finger together. The index finger (al-sabbābah) lies between the middle finger and the thumb. It is called al-sabbābah because a person often points with it while reviling another; when he insults someone he says, “You…,” and indicates with this finger.
It is also called al-sibāḥah because one points with it while proclaiming tasbīḥ (the glorification of Allah). For this reason a worshipper lifts it during prayer when he sits between the two prostrations and supplicates, “Lord, forgive me and have mercy on me.” Each time he supplicates he raises it, pointing toward Allah, exalted is He, for Allah is above, high over His creation.
