Thus the Messenger ﷺ divided people into three groups: the inhabitants of Hell—may Allah protect us and you from it—have already entered it; the poor have entered Paradise; and the wealthy believers are detained, held back until Allah wills otherwise.
As for the people of the Fire, the Messenger ﷺ—truthful and confirmed—told us that most of those who enter it are women, for they are a source of temptation. Hence, on one festival day he addressed them, saying, “O womenfolk, give charity, even if only from your jewelry, for you make up the majority of Hell’s people.” They asked, “Messenger of Allah, why is that?” He replied, “Because you frequently curse and you are ungrateful to your husbands.”
“ You frequently curse” means you often resort to verbal abuse and insults; your tongues are sharp and your scheming great. “And you are ungrateful to the husband” means the spouse: were he to treat her kindly all his life and she then saw a single fault, she would say, “I have never seen any good from you at all.” She denies the favor and refuses to acknowledge it.
This hadith also shows that one must beware of the trial (fitnah) of wealth, for affluence can lead a person to transgression, insolence, arrogance, rejection of the truth, and belittling others. Guard, therefore, two blessings: wealth and health. Idleness as well is a cause of temptation. These three—wealth, health, and leisure—are blessings about which many people are deceived, as in his saying: “There are two blessings in which many people are deluded: health and free time.”
