This is proof that the poor and the weak are the people of Paradise, for they are generally the ones who yield to the truth. Conversely, the overbearing and the arrogant are the people of the Fire—Allah’s refuge is sought—because they turn away from the truth and act tyrannically. Their hearts do not soften at the remembrance of Allah, nor do they show compassion toward His servants. We ask Allah to grant safety and well-being to us and to you.
4/255 – Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “A corpulent, hulking man will indeed be brought on the Day of Resurrection, yet he will not weigh with Allah even as much as a mosquito’s wing.” Agreed upon.
[Commentary]
The author—may Allah have mercy on him—cites, on the authority of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “A corpulent, hulking man will indeed be brought on the Day of Resurrection, yet he will not weigh with Allah even as much as a mosquito’s wing.” He includes this hadith in the chapter dealing with the downtrodden and the poor among the Muslims, because obesity is usually the result of overindulgence—that is, excessive eating—and excessive eating suggests ample wealth and affluence. Affluence, in turn, often leads to vanity, arrogance, and ingratitude for blessings, to the point that on the Day of Resurrection such a man will find himself in this very situation: a massive, overweight individual—laden with flesh and fat, huge in stature—who nonetheless does not weigh with Allah even the wing of a mosquito. The mosquito is one of the most insignificant, contemptible, and weakest of creatures, and the same applies to its wing.
