himself.
Jawwāẓ, then, is the chronically anxious person who cannot bear hardship. He is forever groaning, sorrowful, weighed down by worry and grief; he objects to Allah’s decree and destiny, refuses to submit to it, and is not content with Allah as his Lord.
The arrogant man, for his part, combines two traits: belittling people and rejecting the truth. The Prophet ﷺ said, “Arrogance is rejecting the truth and belittling people.” Rejecting the truth means turning it away; belittling people means holding them in contempt. Such a person regards himself as superior both to the truth and to creation: he will not yield to what is right, nor will he show mercy to others—Allah’s refuge is sought.
These, then, are the hallmarks of the people of Hell. We ask Allah to protect us and you from the Fire and to admit us and you into Paradise. Truly, He is Most Generous, Most Kind.
2/253 – Abu’l-ʿAbbās Sahl ibn Saʿd al-Sāʿidī (Allah be pleased with him) reported: A man once passed by the Prophet ﷺ. The Prophet said to a companion who was sitting with him, “What is your opinion of this man?” He replied, “He is one of the nobility; by Allah, he is surely deserving—if he seeks a woman’s hand he should be married, and if he intercedes his intercession should be accepted.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ remained silent. Then another man passed by, and the Prophet ﷺ asked, “What is your opinion of this one?” He said, “Messenger of Allah, this man is one of the poor Muslims: if he proposes he is unlikely to be married, if he intercedes his intercession will not be accepted, and people will scarcely listen to what he says.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “This man is better than an earth-full of the likes of that one.” Agreed upon.
