Commentary
The author—may Allah have mercy on him—relates from Khawlah, the wife of Ḥamzah ibn ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib, that the Prophet ﷺ said: “There are men who wade into the property of Allah without any right; for them is the Fire on the Day of Resurrection.” This hadith is further proof that wrongdoing with respect to wealth is categorically forbidden, for it stands in direct opposition to justice.
The word “wade” indicates that they act rashly and without any Sharīʿah foundation, ruining wealth by spending it on harmful things—such as cigarettes, narcotics, wine, and the like. They also “wade” into it by committing theft, usurpation, and similar crimes, or by making baseless claims, alleging ownership of what is not theirs while knowingly lying.
In short, whoever deals with wealth—whether his own or other people’s—in a manner contrary to the Sacred Law is threatened with the Fire, Allah’s refuge is sought, on the Day of Resurrection—unless he repents. Genuine repentance requires restoring what was wrongfully taken to its owners and renouncing every unlawful expenditure, such as cigarettes, alcohol, and their counterparts. Whoever does so is among those whose repentance Allah accepts, as He, exalted be He, says:
“Say, ‘O My servants who have transgressed against their own souls, do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins; He is the All-Forgiving, the Most Merciful. Turn to your Lord in repentance and submit to Him before the punishment overtakes you, then you will not be helped. And follow the best of what has been sent down to you from your Lord before the punishment comes upon you suddenly while you are unaware, lest any soul should say, “Alas for me, for what I neglected of my duty to Allah, and indeed I was among the mockers,” or lest it should say, “If only Allah had guided me…’” ⦗39:53–56⦘
