890—‘Abd al-Rahman mentioned it, saying: Ishaq ibn Ibrahim al-Mukattib narrated to us; he said: Zakariyya ibn Yahya ibn Hamdawayh al-Hulwani narrated to us; he said: I heard a companion of Nu‘aym ibn Hammad say:
“When we came to Iraq and Nu‘aym ibn Hammad was imprisoned, one of these people entered upon him in prison and said to Nu‘aym, ‘Has not Allah said, “Vision cannot grasp Him, but He grasps all vision” [al-An‘am 6:103]?’
Nu‘aym replied, ‘Indeed; that is in this world.’
The man asked, ‘And what is your proof?’
Nu‘aym replied: ‘Allah alone is everlasting, while He created creation to perish; thus ⦗563⦘ they are unable to look with perishable sight. But when they are renewed with an everlasting creation, they will look upon the Everlasting One with everlasting sight.’
