871—Ahmad informed us; he said: Umar informed us; he said: Abd Allah ibn ⦗556⦘ Muhammad ibn Ja‘far ibn Shadhan informed us; he said: Usamah ibn Ahmad al-Tujibi related to us; he said: al-Harith ibn Miskin related to us; he said: Ashhab related to us. Malik was asked about Allah’s saying:

“Some faces that Day will be radiant, looking toward their Lord.” [Surah al-Qiyamah 75:22–23]

“Will they look upon Allah?” He replied, “Yes.”

I said, “Some people maintain that they will look at what He has.” He said, “Rather, they will look upon Him directly. Moses said, ‘My Lord, show Yourself to me, that I may look upon You.’ Then He said to him, ‘You will not see Me.’ And Allah says:

“No indeed! On that Day they will be veiled from their Lord.” [Surah al-Mutaffifin 83:15]

٨٧١ - أَخْبَرَنَا أَحْمَدُ، قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنَا عُمَرُ، قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ ⦗٥٥٦⦘ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ جَعْفَرِ بْنِ شَاذَانَ، قَالَ: ثَنَا أُسَامَةُ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ التُّجِيبِيُّ، قَالَ: ثَنَا الْحَارِثُ بْنُ مِسْكِينٍ، قَالَ: ثَنَا أَشْهَبُ، قَالَ: وَسُئِلَ مَالِكٌ عَنْ قَوْلِهِ ﷿ ﴿وُجُوهٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ نَاضِرَةٌ﴾ [القيامة: ٢٢] ﴿إِلَى رَبِّهَا نَاظِرَةٌ﴾ [القيامة: ٢٣] أَتَنْظُرُ إِلَى اللَّهِ ﷿؟ قَالَ: نَعَمْ , فَقُلْتُ: إِنَّ أَقْوَامًا يَقُولُونَ تَنْظُرُ مَا عِنْدَهُ , قَالَ: بَلْ تَنْظُرُ إِلَيْهِ نَظَرًا , وَقَدْ قَالَ مُوسَى: ﴿رَبِّ أَرِنِي أَنْظُرْ إِلَيْكَ﴾ [الأعراف: ١٤٣] فَقَالَ لَهُ: ﴿لَنْ تَرَانِي﴾ [الأعراف: ١٤٣] وَقَالَ: اللَّهُ ﷿ ﴿كَلَّا إِنَّهُمْ عَنْ رَبِّهِمْ يَوْمَئِذٍ لَمَحْجُوبُونَ﴾ [المطففين: ١٥]
