860. Ja‘far ibn ‘Abd Allah informed us; Muhammad ibn Harun informed us; Abu al-Rabi‘ narrated to us; he said: Abu ‘Awanah narrated to us, from Hilal, from ‘Abd Allah ibn ‘Ukaym, who said:

I heard ‘Abd Allah ibn Mas‘ud speaking in this mosque—meaning the mosque of Kufa. He would begin with those on his right before addressing us, saying: “By Allah, there is not a single person among you except that his Lord will be alone with him on the Day of Resurrection, just as one of you is alone with the moon on the night of the full moon. Then He will say: ‘What deluded you, O son of Adam?’ three times. ‘How did you answer the messengers?’ three times. ‘How did you act upon what you knew?’”

The statement of Hudhayfah and Ubayy ibn Ka‘b has already appeared in the exegesis of the verse.
