858 — Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Hatim mentioned it, saying: Abu Bakr Muhammad ibn Abd Allah ibn Habib al-Wasiti narrated to us; Abu Imran Musa ibn Isma'il al-Hubuli narrated to us; Hafs ibn Salm narrated to us, from Awn ibn Abi Shaddad, from al-Hasan, concerning Luqman’s counsel to his son: “My son, when you fast, wash your face, oil your head, and raise your voice among people, so that they do not know that you are fasting. Do not show off to people through your fasting and prayer, lest you destroy your own edifice and mislead others. For whoever acts for Allah in secret, He will reward him openly, raise his ranks in the Hereafter, grant him everlasting life in His Abode, the vision of His Face, and the companionship of His prophets.”
Reports from the Companions: What has been narrated from Abu Bakr al-Siddiq has already been mentioned in the course of the exegesis of the verse.
