- I found in my book, from al-Hasan ibn Ali ibn Muhammad ibn al-Fadl: Muhammad ibn Amr informed us; al-Hasan ibn Thabit al-Taghlibi narrated to us; Abu Bakr ibn Abi al-Aswad narrated to us. He said: Abd al-Rahman ibn Mahdi said:
“I have not seen anyone more knowledgeable than Hammad ibn Zayd regarding the sunnah and what falls ⦗71⦘ within its scope. Nor have I seen anyone more apt in describing it than Shihab ibn Khirash. Sufyan would listen attentively to him when he spoke, and I have not seen anyone more eloquent than Ibn al-Mubarak.”
٤٥ - وَجَدْتُ فِي كِتَابِي عَنِ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ عَلِيِّ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ الْفَضْلِ , أنبا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَمْرٍو , ثنا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ ثَابِتٍ التَّغْلِبِيُّ , ثنا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي الْأَسْوَدِ , قَالَ: قَالَ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ مَهْدِيٍّ: «لَمْ أَرَ أَعْرَفَ بِالسُّنَّةِ وَمَا يَدْخُلُ ⦗٧١⦘ فِيهَا مِنْ حَمَّادِ بْنِ زَيْدٍ , وَلَمْ أَرَ أَحَدًا أَوْصَفَ لَهَا مِنْ شِهَابِ بْنِ خِرَاشٍ , وَكَانَ سُفْيَانُ يُنْصِتُ لَهُ إِذَا تَكَلَّمَ , وَلَمْ أَرَ أَحَدًا أَبْلَغَ مِنِ ابْنِ الْمُبَارَكِ»
