844—Jaʿfar ibn ʿAbd Allah ibn Yaʿqūb informed us: Muhammad ibn Hārūn al-Rūyānī informed us; Muhammad ibn Mahdī al-ʿAṭṭār narrated to us; Asad ibn Mūsā narrated to us; Hammād ibn Zayd narrated to us, from ʿAṭāʾ ibn al-Sāʾib—through another chain. ⦗541⦘
845—And Ahmad ibn ʿUbayd informed us: ʿAlī ibn ʿAbd Allah ibn Mubashshir informed us; Ahmad ibn Sinān narrated to us; Sulaymān ibn Harb narrated to us; Hammād ibn Zayd narrated to us, from ʿAṭāʾ ibn al-Sāʾib, from his father, who said:
ʿAmmār ibn Yāsir led us in a brief prayer. When he concluded with the salām, he was told, “You have indeed shortened the prayer, O Abū al-Yaqẓān.” He said, “Yet I supplicated in it with a supplication that I heard from the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace.” He then left.
A man followed him. ʿAṭāʾ said, “It was my father who followed him, but he disliked to say so.” He asked him about the supplication, and he replied:
“O Allah, by Your knowledge of the unseen and Your power over creation, I ask You to keep me alive so long as You know that life is better for me, and cause me to die when death is better for me. O Allah, I ask You to grant me forbearance in anger and in contentment; moderation in poverty and wealth; bliss that never ends; and lasting joy. I ask You for the comfort of life after death, for the delight of beholding Your Face, and for longing to meet You without harmful adversity or a misguiding trial. O Allah, adorn us with the adornment of faith, and make us guides who are rightly guided.” ⦗542⦘
The wording of the two reports is the same, except that Asad ibn Mūsā added in his report: “And I ask You for contentment after Your decree.”
