842—Ali ibn Muhammad ibn Umar and Muhammad ibn Ali al-Shawi informed us; they said: Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Hatim informed us; he said: Muhammad ibn Abdullah ibn Yazid al-Muqri narrated to us; he said: My father narrated to us; he said: Waraqah—namely, ibn Umar al-Yashkuri—narrated to us; he said: Abu Zabya narrated to us, from Kurz ibn Wabarah, from Nuaym ibn Abi Hind, from Abu Ubaydah ibn Abdullah ibn Masud, from his father, from the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, concerning:
“The Day people will stand before the Lord of the worlds.” [al-Mutaffifin: 6]
On the Day of Resurrection, they will stand for forty years, their eyes fixed as they await the final judgment, until sweat reaches their mouths because of the severity of their distress. Then Allah, Exalted is He, will descend, and the nations will kneel. A caller will then call out: “O people, would you not be pleased that your Lord—who created you, provided for you, and commanded you to worship Him, yet you turned to others besides Him and were ungrateful for His blessings—should leave you with those to whom you devoted yourselves, so that every person may follow that to which he devoted himself?”
Then a caller will call out: “Whoever devoted himself to anything, let him remain with it.” Those who devoted themselves to a stone, a piece of wood, or an animal will then set off. Their gods will flee from them, and they will say, “We had no awareness of this.” The Jews, the Christians, and the followers of the angels and devils who commanded them to worship them will follow, and they will drive them until they cast them into Hell.
The people of Islam will remain ⦗538⦘, and their Lord, Exalted is He, will say to them: “Why have the people gone while you have remained?” They will say, “We have a Lord whom we have not yet seen.” He will say, “Will you recognize Him when you see Him?” They will say, “There is a sign between us and Him: when we see Him, we shall recognize Him.” Then He will uncover His Shin, and they will fall down in prostration before Him. A people will remain whose backs are like the horns of cattle; they will wish to prostrate, but their backs will not bend.
They will raise their heads, and their light will be before them and on their right. Among them will be one whose light before him is like a mountain, while others will have less than that, according to their deeds. They will walk, following it as it proceeds before them. The hypocrites will say, “Wait for us, so that we may borrow from your light.” The light will proceed ahead of them, while its trace remains like the edge of a sword—a slippery, treacherous path:
“It will be said, ‘Go back behind you and seek a light.’ Then a wall with a gate will be set up between them.” [al-Hadid: 13]—to the end of the verse.
