- Ali ibn Muhammad ibn Umar informed us; Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Hatim informed us; Muhammad ibn Muslim narrated to us. He said: I heard Abu Ziyad say: I heard Abd al-Rahman ibn Mahdi say:
“People fall into different categories: among them are those who are leading authorities in the sunnah and leading authorities in hadith; and among them are those who are leading authorities in hadith alone. As for one who is a leading authority in the sunnah and a leading authority in hadith, that is Sufyan al-Thawri.”
٤٣ - أَخْبَرَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عُمَرَ , أنبا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ أَبِي حَاتِمٍ , حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ مُسْلِمٍ , قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ أَبَا زِيَادٍ يَقُولُ: سَمِعْتُ عَبْدَ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنَ مَهْدِيٍّ يَقُولُ: " النَّاسُ عَلَى وُجُوهٍ: فَمِنْهُمْ مَنْ هُوَ إِمَامٌ فِي السُّنَّةِ إِمَامٌ فِي الْحَدِيثِ , وَمِنْهُمْ مَنْ هُوَ إِمَامٌ فِي الْحَدِيثِ , فَأَمَّا مَنْ هُوَ إِمَامٌ فِي السُّنَّةِ وَإِمَامٌ فِي الْحَدِيثِ فَسُفْيَانُ الثَّوْرِيُّ "
