830 — ‘Abd Allah ibn Muhammad ibn ‘Ali ibn Zayd al-Naysaburi informed us; he said: Makki ibn ‘Abdan narrated to us; he said: ‘Abd Allah ibn Hashim informed us; he said: Yahya ibn Sa‘id narrated to us; he said: Sa‘id ibn Abi ‘Arubah narrated to us; he said: Qatadah narrated to us, from Anas ibn Malik, from the Prophet ﷺ:
“The believers will be gathered on the Day of Resurrection and will be inspired to do so. They will say, ‘If only we could seek intercession with our Lord, so that He might relieve us of this place of ours.’ They will then come to Adam”—and he mentioned the hadith, until he said—“Then they will say: ‘Go to Muhammad, a servant whose former and latter sins Allah has forgiven.’ ⦗529⦘ They will come to me, and I will seek permission to enter upon my Lord. I will be granted permission, and when I see my Lord, I will fall—or prostrate myself—before my Lord. He will leave me as long as Allah wills to leave me. Then it will be said: ‘Rise, Muhammad. Speak, and you will be heard; ask, and you will be given; intercede, and your intercession will be accepted.’ I will raise my head and praise Him with praises that He will teach me. Then I will intercede, and He will set for me a limit, and I will admit them into Paradise.
“Then I will return to Him a second time. When I see my Lord, I will fall, or prostrate myself, before my Lord. He will leave me as long as Allah wills to leave me. Then I will be told: ‘Rise, Muhammad. Speak, and you will be heard; ask, and you will be given; intercede, and your intercession will be accepted.’ I will raise my head and praise Him with praises that He will teach me. Then I will intercede, and He will set for me a limit, and I will admit them into Paradise.
“Then I will return to Him a third time. When I see my Lord, I will fall, or prostrate myself, before my Lord. He will leave me as long as Allah wills to leave me.
“Then I will return to Him a fourth time and say: ‘My Lord, none remains except those whom the Quran has restrained.’”
Al-Bukhari and Muslim transmitted it through the narration of Sa‘id ibn Abi ‘Arubah.
