798 — Al-Hasan ibn Uthman informed us; Muhammad ibn Abd Allah ibn Ibrahim informed us; Ishaq ibn al-Hasan narrated to us; al-Husayn ibn Muhammad narrated to us; Shayban narrated to us from Qatadah concerning His saying, “For those who do good is the finest reward—and more” [Yunus 10:26]. He said: “We were told that when the believers enter Paradise, their Lord will call out to them: ‘Allah has promised you the finest reward, which is Paradise; and the additional reward is looking upon the Face of the Most Merciful.’”
Allah, Exalted is He, says: “On that Day there will be radiant faces, looking toward their Lord” [al-Qiyamah 75:22–23].
In explanation of His saying, “On that Day there will be radiant faces, looking toward their Lord” [al-Qiyamah 75:22–23], Ibn Abbas related that it means looking upon Allah, Exalted is He. This was also held by the Successors: al-Hasan, Ikrimah, Mujahid, Muhammad ibn Ali ibn al-Husayn, Zayd ibn Ali ibn Husayn, Qatadah, and al-Dahhak ibn Muzahim ⦗514⦘. Among the jurists, Malik and al-Shafii both cited this verse as evidence for the possibility of seeing Allah.
