- Ahmad ibn Ubayd informed us; Muhammad ibn al-Husayn informed us; Ahmad ibn Zuhayr narrated to us; Amr ibn Asim al-Kilabi narrated to us; Sulayman ibn al-Mughirah said:
“I was with Humayd ibn Hilal. When he rose from his gathering, Ayyub and Yunus ibn Ubayd, along with some others, followed him and entered upon him. I saw displeasure on his face, so I asked, ‘What is the matter with you?’
He replied, ‘I had thought that these two’—meaning the two shaykhs, al-Hasan and Ibn Sirin—‘if they died, would be succeeded by them,’ meaning Ayyub and Yunus.”
I said, “Indeed, we too hope this of them.”
He said, “Have you not seen them following me?” He disapproved of what they had done.
٢٧ - أَخْبَرَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عُبَيْدٍ , أنبا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْحُسَيْنِ , ثنا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ زُهَيْرٍ , ثنا عَمْرُو بْنُ عَاصِمٍ الْكِلَابِيُّ , ثنا سُلَيْمَانُ بْنُ الْمُغِيرَةِ , قَالَ: " كُنْتُ عِنْدَ حُمَيْدِ بْنِ هِلَالٍ , فَلَمَّا قَامَ مِنْ مَجْلِسِهِ تَبِعَهُ أَيُّوبُ وَيُونُسُ بْنُ عُبَيْدٍ فِي نَاسٍ فَدَخَلُوا عَلَيْهِ , فَرَأَيْتُ فِي وَجْهِهِ الْمَسَاءَةَ , قُلْتُ: «مَا لَكَ؟» قَالَ: «كُنْتُ أَحْسِبُ أَنَّ هَذَيْنِ» - يَعْنِي الشَّيْخَيْنِ الْحَسَنَ وَابْنَ سِيرِينَ - إِنْ هَلَكَا خَلَفَاهُمَا. يَعْنِي أَيُّوبَ وَيُونُسَ " , قُلْتُ: وَإِنَّا لَنَأْمُلُ ذَلِكَ فِيهِمَا. قَالَ: «أَمَا رَأَيْتَ اتِّبَاعَهُمَا إِيَّايَ؟» وَكَرِهَ فِعْلَهُمَا "
