683—Ahmad ibn Ubayd informed us. He said: Ali ibn Abd Allah ibn Mubashshir informed us. He said: Abu Musa—meaning Muhammad ibn al-Muthanna—narrated to us. He said: Abd al-Wahhab narrated to us. He said: Khalid narrated to us, from Abu Uthman, from Abu Musa.

684—Abd Allah ibn Muhammad ibn Jafar also informed us. He said: Yaqub ibn Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab narrated to us. He said: Hafs ibn Amr narrated to us. He said: Abd al-Wahhab informed us. He said: Khalid narrated to us, from Abu Uthman, from Abu Musa, who said: “We were with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, on a military expedition. Whenever we ascended a high place or descended into a valley, we raised our voices in proclaiming the greatness of Allah. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, came near to us and said: ‘O people, be gentle with yourselves, for you are not calling upon one who is deaf or absent. Rather, you are calling upon One who is Hearing and Seeing. Indeed, the One you call upon is closer to each of you than the neck of his mount.’ Then he said: ‘O Abd Allah ibn Qays, shall I not teach you a phrase from the treasures of Paradise? There is no might nor power except through Allah.’”

The version narrated by Abu Musa does not contain the words, “a phrase.” Muslim transmitted it in his Sahih from Ishaq ibn Rahawayh, from Abd al-Wahhab; and al-Bukhari transmitted it through the narration of Sufyan al-Thawri and others, from Asim.
