Abd al-Rahman said: Abu Zur'ah narrated to us: Ali ibn Maysarah ibn Khalid al-Hamadhani narrated to me: Muhammad ibn Salih ibn Abi Ubayd Allah narrated to me from his father, who said:
“I read in the official records of Hisham ibn Abd al-Malik, addressed to his governor in Khurasan, Nasr ibn Sayyar:
‘To proceed: A man belonging to the Dahriyyah, one of the heretical apostates, has emerged in your region. He is called Jahm ibn Safwan. If you gain control of him, then kill him; otherwise, send men secretly against him to assassinate him.’”
قَالَ: عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ: ثَنَا أَبُو زُرْعَةَ، قَالَ: ثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ مَيْسَرَةَ بْنِ خَالِدٍ الْهَمَذَانِيُّ، حَدَّثَنِي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ صَالِحِ بْنِ أَبِي عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، قَالَ: " قَرَأْتُ فِي دَوَاوِينِ هِشَامِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْمَلِكِ إِلَى عَامِلِهِ بِخُرَاسَانَ , نَصْرِ بْنِ سَيَّارٍ: أَمَّا بَعْدُ , فَقَدْ نَجَمَ قِبَلَكَ رَجُلٌ مِنَ الدَّهْرِيَّةِ مِنَ الزَّنَادِقَةِ , يُقَالُ لَهُ جَهْمُ بْنُ صَفْوَانَ , فَإِنْ أَنْتَ ظَفِرْتَ بِهِ فَاقْتُلْهُ , وَإِلَّا فَادْسُسْ إِلَيْهِ مِنَ الرِّجَالِ غِيلَةً لِيَقْتُلُوهُ "
