Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Hatim mentioned it, saying: Al-Hasan ibn Ahmad, Abu Fatimah, narrated to us; Muhammad ibn Abd al-Rahman al-Makhzumi narrated to us; Ubayd ibn Hashim informed us, saying:
“The first to claim that the Quran was created was Jahm. The Umayyads sent after him and pursued him—that is, they killed him. The matter then subsided until a man arose in Kufa and claimed, ‘The Quran is created.’ This reached Ibn Abi Layla, so he rode to Isa ibn Musa and informed him. Isa then wrote to Abu Jafar, who wrote back instructing him to call the man to repentance: if he repented, [he was to be spared]; otherwise, his neck was to be struck. So they called him to repent, and he repented; thus the matter settled down.”
