604 — ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Hatim related: Harb ibn Isma‘il al-Kirmani informed us in what he wrote to me, saying: I heard Ishaq ibn Rahawayh being asked about a man who says, “The Quran is not created, but my recitation of it is created, because I am relating it, and our speech is created.” Ishaq replied: “This is an innovation. He is not to be tolerated upon this until he retracts it and abandons this statement of his.”
605 — Ishaq was asked on another occasion about the Lafziyyah, and he said: “They are innovators.”
606 — ‘Abd al-Rahman said: Abu ‘Ali al-Quhustani said: I heard Ishaq ibn Rahawayh say, “So-and-so”—meaning Dawud al-Asfahani—“has a third, evil position concerning the Quran.” They continued asking Ishaq what it was, until he said: “He openly professed the doctrine of wording,” meaning that he said, “My utterance of the Quran is created.”
