603—On the back of some of Abu Thawr’s written works, I found the following: Ja‘far narrated to us ⦗393⦘ that Abu Thawr was asked about expressions concerning the Quran. He replied: “This is something of which you may be ignorant. By Allah, Allah will not question you about it, so do not speak about it. For whoever claims that his utterance of the Quran is created has agreed with the Lafziyyah, since when the Quran is heard from you, you have claimed that your utterance of the Quran is created. Thus, you have answered the people by saying that it is created.”
