Ahmad ibn Abd Allah ibn al-Khaḍir al-Muqriʾ and Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Abi Muslim informed us; they said: Ahmad ibn al-Hasan related to us; he said: Abu Ismaʿil Muhammad ibn Ismaʿil al-Sulami related to us, saying: I asked Abu Abd Allah Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Hanbal about one who says, “The Quran is created.” He replied: “The Quran is part of Allah’s knowledge, and Allah’s knowledge is not created. Whoever says that it is created is a disbeliever. As for one who suspends judgment: if he understands the matter and recognizes it, he is a Jahmite; but whoever does not understand or recognize it should be instructed.”
601 – Abu Ismaʿil said: Regarding one who says, “My utterance of the Quran is created”—although, at that time, the expression “my utterance of the Quran” had not yet arisen—he replied: “Those who hold this view are Jahmites, Jahmites. Allah Most High says: ‘until he hears the words of Allah’ [al-Tawbah: 6]. From whom does he hear it?” ⦗392⦘ Abu Ismaʿil said: He was asked, “Is this your position?” He replied, “Yes.”
