576 — Ubayd Allah ibn Ahmad informed us. Al-Husayn ibn Isma'il informed us. He said: Ya'qub al-Dawraqi narrated to us. He said: Isma'il ibn Ulayyah narrated to us. He said: Hajjaj ibn Abi Uthman narrated to us. He said: Yahya ibn Abi Kathir narrated to us, from Hilal ibn Abi Maymunah, from Ata ibn Yasar, from Mu'awiyah ibn al-Hakam, who said:
While I was praying with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, a man beside me sneezed, so I said, “May Allah have mercy on you.” The people then cast their looks at me, and I said, “May my mother be bereaved of me!” They began ⦗382⦘ striking their thighs with their hands. When I saw that they were signaling me to be silent, I fell silent.
When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had finished, may my father and mother be sacrificed for him, I have never seen a teacher before him or after him who taught better than he did. By Allah, he neither rebuked nor struck me. Rather, he said: “Nothing of our ordinary speech is suitable during this prayer. It consists only of glorifying Allah, praising Him, proclaiming His greatness, and reciting the Quran.” Or words to that effect, as spoken by the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.
Muslim transmitted it.
