551—Muhammad ibn Ali ibn Abdullah al-Anbari informed us: Ahmad ibn Umar informed us: Yunus ibn Abd al-Ala narrated to us: Ibn Wahb narrated to us: Hisham ibn Sa'd informed me, from Zayd ibn Aslam, from his father, from Umar, who said: The Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, said:

“Moses said, ‘My Lord, our father Adam is the one who expelled us and himself from Paradise.’ Allah then showed Adam to him, and Moses said to him, ‘Are you Adam?’ He replied, ‘Yes.’ He said, ‘Are you the one into whom Allah breathed of His spirit, taught all the names, ⦗371⦘ and made His angels prostrate before you?’ He replied, ‘Yes.’ Moses said, ‘Then what led you to expel us and yourself from Paradise?’

“Adam said, ‘Who are you?’ He replied, ‘I am Moses.’ Adam said, ‘Are you the one to whom Allah spoke from behind a veil, without appointing between Himself and you any intermediary messenger from among His creatures?’ He replied, ‘Yes.’ Adam said, ‘Did you not find in the Book of Allah that this would happen before I was created?’ He replied, ‘Indeed I did.’ Adam said, ‘Then why do you blame me for something concerning which Allah’s decree had already preceded?’”

The Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, then said: “Thus Adam prevailed over Moses in argument.”

552—Ahmad ibn Ubayd also informed us: Ali ibn Abdullah ibn Mubashshir informed us: Ahmad ibn Sinan narrated to us: Yazid ibn Harun narrated to us: Muhammad ibn Amr informed us, from Abu Salamah, from Abu Hurayrah, who said: The Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, said:

“Adam and Moses disputed. Moses said, ‘Are you the one whom Allah created with His hand and settled in Paradise, then caused us to leave it?’ ⦗372⦘ Adam replied, ‘Are you the one whom Allah chose for His messages, brought near for private discourse, spoke to directly, and to whom He revealed the Torah? Did you not find that the Torah mentioned the deed I committed forty years before He created me?’ He replied, ‘Forty years?’ Adam said, ‘O Moses, then how can you blame me for a deed which Allah had decreed for me forty years before He created me?’”

The Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, said: “Thus Adam prevailed over Moses in argument.”
