Al-Hasan ibn Uthman informed us: Umar ibn Ja‘far informed us: Ahmad related to us: Ahmad ibn al-Hasan al-Tirmidhi related to us, saying: “I said to Ahmad ibn Hanbal, ‘The people have become embroiled in the matter of the Quran; so what should I say?’ He said, ‘Are you not created?’ I said, ‘Yes.’ He said, ‘Then your speech, being from you, is created.’ I said, ‘Yes.’ He said, ‘And is not the Quran among the speech of Allah?’ I said, ‘Yes.’ He said, ‘And the speech of Allah?’ I said, ‘Yes.’ He said, ‘Then can there be something created from Allah?’”
