Muhammad ibn Abdullah informed us: Ahmad informed us: Abdullah ibn Ahmad related to us: Abu Abdullah al-Sulami related to me: I asked Abu Ya'qub al-Khazzaz, Ishaq ibn Sulayman—that is, al-Razi—about the Quran. He replied, “It is the speech of Allah, and it is not created.”
He then said to me, “If we say, ‘The Quran is the speech of Allah,’ yet do not say, ‘Created’ or ‘not created,’ then there is no difference between us and these people”—meaning, the Jahmiyyah.
I mentioned this to Ahmad ibn Hanbal, and Ahmad said to me, “May Allah reward Abu Ya'qub with goodness.”
