Ahmad ibn ‘Ubayd informed us; he said: Muhammad ibn al-Husayn informed us; he said: Ahmad ibn Zuhayr informed us; he said: Yahya ibn Yusuf narrated to us. And Ali ibn Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn Bakr informed us; he said: al-Hasan ibn Muhammad ibn ‘Uthman narrated to us; he said: Ya‘qub ibn Sufyan narrated to us; he said: I heard Ahmad ibn Ibrahim—meaning al-Dawraqi—say: Yahya ibn Yusuf Abu Zakariyya narrated to us, saying: “We arrived in Mecca, and one of my companions said to me, ‘Would you like to visit Abdullah ibn Idris and greet him?’ I said, ‘Yes.’ So we went to him, and my companion said to him, ‘O Abu Muhammad, there are people among us who say that the Quran is created.’ He asked, ‘Are they Jews?’ He replied, ‘No.’ He asked, ‘Then are they Christians?’ He replied, ‘No.’ He asked, ‘Then are they Magians?’ He replied, ‘No.’ He asked, ‘Then who are they?’ He replied, ‘They are among those who profess monotheism.’ He said, ‘They lie. Such people are not among those who profess monotheism; they are heretics. Whoever claims that the Quran is created has thereby claimed that Allah is created, and whoever claims that Allah is created has disbelieved. Such people are heretics.’”
